August is not a quiet month, at least not in Chicago comedy. There is greatness everywhere. Greatness visiting from out of town and greatness we’re privileged to have year around.
Comedians visiting this month include: Jim Gaffigan, Dan Telfer, David Heti, John Roy, Dwayne Kennedy, Lahna Turner, Miranda Sings, Jay Phillips, Doug Benson, K-Von, Bill Engvall, Seth McFarlane, Norm McDonald and more.
There are also several comedy festivals of note:
- The Chicago Nerd Comedy Festival (August 13-16)
- The First Chicago Improv Musical Festival (August 13-16)
- The Funny or Die Oddball Comedy Festival with Amy Schumer, Aziz Ansari, Jeff Ross, TJ Miller, Jay Pharaoh, Anthony Jeselnik, Bridget Everett, Nick Kroll and Rachel Feinstein. Hosted by Big Jay Oakerson. (August 29)
A bittersweet event: the August 16 farewell performance of Jamie Campbell, who was named “Best Stand Up In Chicago” by the Reader in 2013. He is moving to L.A. You’ll want to see him before he goes. He has a remarkable personal story which he was kind enough to share with me here. Please check out Jamie’s just published article about his time in Chicago here.
It would be impossible to list all the events taking place this month, so I’ve listed as many as I can. But there’s more! Please visit venue sites and see what else is happening. Events are in Chicago unless otherwise noted.
Parents: there are comedy shows for kids, too. Check out the Comedy Shrine in Aurora for kid-friendly events and the Neo-Futurarium in Chicago for That’s Weird, Grandma.
A tip: you can often find discounted tickets on goldstar.com and Groupon.
Please confirm details to be sure nothing has changed since this posting.
If you have a comedy event to include now or in the future, please email me at temewring@gmail.com.
Thank you to the Chicago comedy community. There’s not another city in the world where all this is possible.

SATURDAY, AUGUST 1
Ben Hollis’s “What’s It Like to Be You?” At 27 Live, 1012 Church Street, Evanston, 7:00 p.m.
Ben Hollis, multi-Emmy winning host of WTTW’s Wild Chicago, interviews former Evanston Mayor Lorraine Morton plus 3 volunteer audience members. Mayor Morton was Evanston’s first African-American mayor, first Democratic mayor and longest serving mayor (1993-2009).
Not technically comedy, but Ben connects the audience with the guests on stage much the way comedians do – by finding the core of the human spirit. Often humorous, always moving, inspiring and honest. I’ve attended several WILTBYs and always leave happy and reminded that our fellow humans can be remarkable in the best sense of the word. Plus, it’s Ben Hollis!

Please enjoy a sample of Ben’s vibrant style.

Jim Gaffigan’s “Contagious” Tour at the BMO Harris Bank Center, 300 Elm St., Rockford, 7:00 p.m.
Jim Gaffigan was born in Elgin, though raised in Indiana. He’s known for being dad to five and for his refreshing, joyous approach to bacon, Hot Pockets and cake. He’s also one of the few people who have a reasonable approach to summer which is that “nice” weather is a terrible, unwelcome assignment to get off the couch. I agree one hundred percent. Summer may not be a good enough reason to leave the house, but Jim Gaffigan’s tour? Yes, I would happily leave the house to see him even in a blizzard.
He is also the star of The Jim Gaffigan Show which premiered in July on TV Land and Comedy Central and the author of Dad is Fat and Food: A Love Story.
Note: Jim Gaffigan comes to Chicago on Thursday, August 6 (see below).

She is also an effective advocate in Springfield and the host of WGN 720 AM’s Pretty Late with Patti Vasquez, my favorite reason to stay up past bed time. I once thought I was going to need an ambulance at a Patti Vasquez show from laughing too hard – I almost laughed myself unconscious.

Ever catch yourself daydreaming about Abe Lincoln’s pajamas, or what kind of music Kennedy listened to? Did we really land on the moon? How did George and Martha Washington meet? The NSFT ensemble has the answers. Each week, our ensemble will explore and improvise all the bits that were left out of our history textbooks based on audience suggestions. Don’t miss out on this historical(ish) lesson!”
