Your Chicago comedy calendar for December 14 – 20

Looking for a perfect holiday gift? How about a faaaabulous showcase? The price is right. Many of Chicago’s showcases are free. Those not free are often only $5 – $10. Sometimes you’ll even find free pizza and in some cases (although not this week), free pancakes. Several people have said to me that budget keeps them from going out to comedy. That’s why I mention it. Every showcase (marked as such) in this calendar has a fantastic line-up you won’t see anywhere else in the world and is extremely low cost or free. Many venues also offer shows at bargain prices. You’ll have a wonderful evening, laugh, regain sanity, forget your pressures, stress and mayhem and see the rising stars and already stars of comedy.

Distance from the city can also be a barrier. But did you know that Second City brings its “Holidazed and Confused Revue” to the suburbs? You can see it in Aurora and Arlington Heights.

Visitors to town this week include Gad Elmalah, Nick Gaza, Cy Amundson and Chris Titus.

Hard lesson: one of the shows I most wanted to see was “The Dave Maher Coma Show” at the Annoyance Theatre. Well, I wasn’t sure if I’d be able to go until the last minute and I didn’t get tickets and guess what? Completely sold out. The last performance, which is this week, is sold out, too. I have it on good authority that last Friday’s show was recorded, so hopefully it will be available. I’ll let you know. But tickets were only $8. It would have been worth it to get them ahead of time even though I wasn’t sure of my ability to attend. So that’s my advice going forward, especially when tickets are so affordable. Get tickets, especially when a run is ending! If you can’t go, someone will be glad to take your place. I scrooged myself and wanted to let you know in the spirit of “if you can’t be a good example, at least be a terrible warning.”

Speaking of sold-out shows, one of Chicago’s greats, Caryn Bark, has two shows coming up. “The Jewish Mother’s Guide to Everything” on December 24 and “Funny Old Broads” on New Years Eve. Both are at the Skokie Theatre and will likely sell out soon.

Just a few days ago, I discovered “Christmas on Cleveland Street” in Wilmette and found a place where the holiday spirit is at its magical best:

As always, please share and help spread the word and email me at temewring@gmail.com if you have a show to add. Please confirm all details before heading out. We called The Annoyance before leaving last Friday and it turned out to have been a good idea. Sadly.

Thank you to the comedians who make this city so extraordinary all year around.
